Elvis Presley 1972 - Madison Square Garden Press Conference Elvis Presley recorded his hit single “Burning Love” on this day 40 years ago.

“Burning Love” was one of Elvis’ last real rock ‘n’ roll tracks to be released on single. It reached number one on the Cashbox chart in the US, but was kept off the top of the Billboard Hot 100 by Chuck Berry’s novelty song “My Ding-A-Ling.” It would reach number seven on the UK singles chart in 1972 and number 13 when re-released as part of an Elvis singles campaign in 2007.

“Burning Love” was recorded at RCA Studio C – Hollywood, California on March 28, 1972. It was the first session to feature the core members of Elvis’ road band, namely James Burton (lead guitar), John Wilkinson (rhythm guitar), Glen D. Hardin (piano) and Ronnie Tutt (drums). Bass player Jerry Scheff was not present, but Emory Gordy provided very fine cover.

The three-day March 1972 session also produced the songs “Always On My Mind,” “Separate Ways,” “Where Do I Go From Here,” “For the Good Times,” “Fool” and “It’s A Matter Of Time.” The latter would be the B-side of “Burning Love”.

Although Elvis reportedly wasn’t particularly fond of “Burning Love,” he did feature it as part of his stage act for a while and it appeared in both the 1972 concert movie “Elvis On Tour” and the 1973 television special “Elvis – Aloha From Hawaii.”

A re-worked version of “Burning Love” appeared in the Cirque du Soleil show “Viva Elvis” which premiered in February 2010. It was also one of the tracks selected for the soundtrack of the show.

“Burning Love” originally appeared on the ill-conceived album “Burning Love and Hits from His Movies, Volume 2” in 1972, but you can now pick it up on numerous compilations, including “The Essential Elvis Presley”.
