Tom Jones receives music industry award

Tom Jones received the prestigious Music Industry Trusts Award at a star-studded ceremony at London’s Grosvenor House Hotel last night (Nov 1).
The MITs Award celebrates those who have made a great contribution to the music industry. Previous recipients include Elton John and George Martin. Martin was among those in attendance to pay tribute to Jones last night. |
David Munns, Chairman of the Award committee, said:
| “Tom Jones is one of those rare beings, a timeless entertainer, a great guy, who clearly loves what he does, and whose talent appeals to successive generations. Tom is Mr Cool, one of the world’s greatest singers and performers and we are extremely proud and honoured that he is the 2010 recipient of the Music Industry Trusts Award.” |
The award was presented by director Tim Burton, who cast Jones in his 1996 movie “Mars Attacks!”. Burton said:
| “He’s inspired so many people and I’ve seen him in concert so many times, and he just gets better and better.” |
Other friends and admirers in attendance included Kelly Jones of the Stereophonics, who performed “Summertime” and “Sea Of Heartbreak”, and Cerys Matthews, who performed “She’s A Lady.”
A total of 1,100 tickets were sold to the ceremony, with profits going to the music therapy charity Nordoff Robbins and the BRIT Trust, which helps to support the BRIT School for the Performing Arts. Additional funds were raised by an auction, with lots including a John Lennon and Yoko Ono perspex and plastic sculpture, which sold for £14,000 ($22,440), and a diamond ring donated by Tom Jones, which went to Tim Burton for £9,000 ($14,425).
Tom Jones performed a number of songs after accepting the award, including “It’s Not Unusual,” “Kiss,” “The Green Green Grass Of Home” and duets with Kelly Jones on “Mama Told Me Not To Come” and Cerys Matthews on “What’s New Pussycat.” Jones also performed songs from his latest album “Praise and Blame.”
Jones is currently touring and will play shows in Holland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway this month.
