Thirty years of the Blues Brothers

The Blues Brothers This month marks 30 years since the release of The Blues Brothers. The Blues Brothers opened on June 20, 1980 and was the tenth most popular movie of 1980, with an international box office of around $115 million.

The Blues Brothers became one of the most memorable comedy movies of the 1980s, not least because of the cameos from some of the all time greats of popular music, including Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles and James Brown.

The characters of Jake and Elwood Blues, played by John Belushi and Dan Akroyd, respectively, first appeared on NBC’s Saturday Night Live in 1978. They also released an album called Briefcase Full of Blues in the same year. Although there was an emphasis on comedy, the Blues Brothers Band was full of accomplished musicians, including Steve Cropper and Donald Dunn of Booker T. & the M.G.’s.

To mark 30 years of the Blues Brothers, here’s two classic scenes from the movie:

Ray Charles and The Blues Brothers – “Twist It (Shake Your Tail Feather)”

Aretha Franklin – “Think”

It’s too bad that there is no news on a Blu-ray release for The Blues Brothers. The 30th anniverary would have been a good time for the upgrade.
