The Who have announced that they will record an album of new material in the summer and also hit the road in November for “The Who Hits 50” tour.

The 50th anniversary tour is not billed officially as the band’s final tour, but Roger Daltrey has described the tour as “the beginning of a long goodbye,” noting that “We’ll stop touring, I’m sure, before we stop playing as a band”.

The press release for the tour announcement states that the band will “take their audience on an ‘Amazing Journey’ through their entire career, from the days of the High Numbers to classic albums such as ‘Who’s Next,” ‘Tommy,’ Quadrophenia, ‘My Generation, ‘Live at Leeds,” up to the present day”.

The following dates are confirmed for the UK & Ireland leg of “The Who Hits 50” tour:

  • 26 November – The O2, Dublin
  • 28 November – Odyssey Arena, Belfast
  • 30 November – SEE Hyrdo, Glasgow
  • 2 December – First Direct Arena, Leeds
  • 5 December – Capital FM Arena, Nottingham
  • 7 December – NIA, Birmingham
  • 9 December – Metro, Newcastle
  • 11 December – Echo Arena, Liverpool
  • 13 December – Phones 4U Arena, Manchester
  • 15 December – Motorpoint, Cardiff
  • 17 December – The O2, London.

The band plans to play the US in 2015, but no firm dates have been agreed yet.

Pete Townshend told the press conference at London’s “Ronnie Scott’s” that he has already given Roger Daltrey three songs for demos for the new album, which will be the band’s first since 2006’s “Endless Wire”. He also said that the album might be in a similar spirit to the recent “pub rock” sound of Daltrey’s “Going Back Home” collaboration with Wilko Johnson.

In advance of the new material, you can pick up “Quadrophenia – Live in London,” which features a show filmed at London’s Wembley Arena on July 8, 2013 during the band’s “Quadrophenia and More” tour. “Quadrophenia – Live in London” was released on June 10 in multiple formats, including a deluxe box set. The box set also includes a Blu-ray audio edition of the original “Quadrophenia” album, which is also available as a standalone title.
