The reunited Beach Boys have achieved their highest ever Billboard albums chart debut with their 29th studio album, “That’s Why God Made The Radio.” The album went in at number three, selling 61,000 copies in the US during its first week.

This is the first Beach Boys album to reach the Billboard albums chart Top Five since 1974 when their “Endless Hits” compilation topped the chart.

“That’s Why God Made The Radio” is the first studio album of new material from all of the band’s surviving original members since “Still Cruisin'” in 1989. The album, recorded earlier this year, was produced by Brian Wilson and executive produced by Mike Love. All of the band members contributed to the songwriting process.

The commercial success of “That’s Why God Made The Radio” has been matched by critical acclaim. Rolling Stone described the album as “a breezy nostalgia trip” and “deeply touching work,” the New York Times said it is “a reflection on aging and memory, on longing and mortality,” and the Guardian enthusiastically asserted that the album is “easily the best thing Brian Wilson has put his name to in the last 30 years.”

A new hour-long PBS special, “The Beach Boys: Doin’ It Again,” will air later this month. The special includes archive footage and a behind the scenes look at the 50th anniversary reunion, including the recording of “That’s Why God Made The Radio.”

The Beach Boys are currently on their 50th Anniversary tour of North America, which concludes on July 15 in Stateline, Nevada. They will then embark on a world tour that begins in Avila, Spain on July 21 and concludes at London’s Wembley Arena on September 28.

“That’s Why God Made The Radio” has also done well in the UK, entering the Official Album Chart at number 15.

The album is available now on CD and also on vinyl in August.
