The forthcoming 6-CD “The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11” brings together all of the recordings from Bob Dylan’s so-called “Basement Tapes,” including many that have not been heard before. The box set and a 2-CD collection of highlights from the set will be released in November.

Levon Helm – 1940-2012

Levon Helm, singer and drummer for The Band, sadly lost his long battle with throat cancer yesterday (April 19) at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He was 71.

Friend and guitarist, Larry Campbell, told Rolling Stone:

“He passed away peacefully at 1:30 this afternoon surrounded by his friends and bandmates. All his friends were there, and it seemed like Levon was waiting for them. Ten minutes after they left we sat there and he just faded away. He did it with dignity.”

Dylan at the Oakland Coliseum – February, 1974

Wolfgang’s Vault has served up another slice of rock history by streaming a two-hour concert from Bob Dylan and The Band. The show was recorded at Alameda County Coliseum, Oakland, California on the evening of 11 February, 1974.

This tour was Dylan’s first for seven-and-a-half years and saw him reunite with The Band who, with the exception of Levon Helm on drums, had backed him on his European tour of 1966 and on the Basement Tapes.
