American jazz drummer Steve Reid died last night in New York after battling cancer. He was 66 years old.

Steve Reid died aged 66 Reid took up drumming at age 16 and began working at the Apollo Theater under the direction of Quincy Jones. After graduating college, he went on to work with a range of great artists, including James Brown, Miles Davis, Dionne Warwick, T-Bone Walker, Peggy Lee, Fats Domino, Ornette Coleman and Sun Ra. He was also a session drummer for Motown. It’s Reid’s great drum work on Martha and the Vandellas’ classic “Dancing in the Street.”

Reid also worked in Broadway productions and travelled extensively while working with various African and European bands.

More recently, Reid recorded four albums with Kieran Hebden (Four Tet), who described Reid as his “musical soul mate,” and did some live gigs and a couple of releases with his own Steve Reid Ensemble, including Daxaar in 2008.

The video below was recorded on February 3, 2009 at Joe’s Pub in New York.
