Phil Collins – Going Back

Written by admin on September 17, 2010 – 8:04 pm -

For Phil Collins’ first solo album since 2002’s “Testify” he has returned to the soul music that most inspired him as a teenager.

“Going Back” features covers of some of the finest Motown and soul hits of the 1960s by artists such as The Tempations, Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas.

Among the musicians on the album are Bob Babbitt (bass), Eddie Willis (guitar) and Ray Monette (guitar) who were members of the legendary Funk Brothers sessions musicians that appeared on the original Motown hits.

The 18-track CD features for the most part faithful reproductions of these classic songs, with highlights including Stevie Wonder’s “Uptight (Everything’s Alright)”, the Four Tops’ “Standing in the Shadows of Love” and Martha Reeves and the Vandellas’ “Jimmy Mack.” Collins has approached this as a labour of love. For him, the project was about singing some of his favourite songs, paying homage to some musical heroes and having fun. On that level it works. It’s a nice collection of songs from a man who clearly loves the material.

If you are looking for an album with radical reinterpretations of the Motown hits, this isn’t for you. If you like Phil Collins’ voice and you are looking for a well produced and appealing collection of songs, this CD will serve you well.
