NBC announces “Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together” telethon

Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel, Jon Bon Jovi and Sting are among the artists who will perform at tomorrow night’s “Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together” telethon.

The telethon will raise funds for the many victims of the giant storm which measured 900 miles across and wreaked havoc across much of America’s north-east.

New Jersey native, Springsteen, made reference to the devastating storm as he introduced a moving performance of “My City of Ruins” at his show in Rochester, NY, last night:

“We’re a band that you can’t separate from the Jersey Shore. We’re still basically a glorified bar band at your service. So tonight I think of not just the ghosts we have standing alongside us – missing brothers, sons, mothers, fathers, friends – but of places that disappear or get lost also. So we’re going to do this tonight from our hometown to your hometown. And I want to also send this out to all the folks who have been working so hard down in New Jersey: the police officers, the firemen, and also to the Governor, who has done such a hard job this past week. We thank them all.”

Bon Jovi cancelled a promotional tour in the UK to get back home to his home state of New Jersey. He said in a statement:

“Once again, the eyes of the world are upon us as we wake to the devastation of Hurricane Sandy. Once again we will have hurdles to clear and challenges we will have to face. When patience is lost … when it seems helpless … when you are in need and you feel as if you’re alone … know you are not alone. We may not have electricity but we have power.”

Others taking part include Christina Aguilera, Jimmy Fallon, Jon Stewart, Kevin Bacon, Mary J. Blige, Tina Fey, James Gandolfini and Al Roker.

“Hurricane Sandy: Coming Together” airs tomorrow night (Friday) at 8/9c p.m. on NBC and its cable stations, including Bravo, CNBC, E!, G4, MSNBC, Style, Syfy and USA. You can also catch it on HBO, online at NBC.com, and on Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Radio on SiriusXM.

ABC have designated Monday as a “Day of Giving” with popular shows such as “Good Morning America” and “Jimmy Kimmel Live” encouraging donations from viewers.

Donations of $10 can be sent to the American Red Cross by texting the word REDCROSS to 90999. Further information is available at redcross.org
