Mick Jagger’s new group, SuperHeavy, will release their first single, “Miracle Worker,” on July 7, ahead of their self-titled debut album on September 20.

SuperHeavy features Mick Jagger, Dave Stewart, Damian Marley (son of Bob), Joss Stone and “Slumdog Millionaire” composer A.R. Rahman.

SuperHeavy previewed an eclectic mix of eight songs from the album at a listening session in LA yesterday, which was followed by a press conference. Stewart told the assembled guests that the group had recorded 35 hours of music in 10 days, from which he and his engineer found the highlights that would work as the roots of songs. Speaking of the way the sessions came together, Jagger said:

“It’s not my usual sort of way of working. You always want to leave some room for improvisation, but you need to have something, some songs, when you walk into the studio. It evolved very quickly. We sat around with our little pads (writing). We did do a lot of jams but it’s all coherent and arranged. We just wrote them quickly.”

This is a multi-cultural group and the songs played reflected that, mixing elements of soul, blues, reggae and Indian music. On the first single, “Miracle Worker,” it is the reggae influence that is to the fore.

Here’s a teaser of “Miracle Worker”:

The album will be released on September 20.
