Huey Lewis and the News have celebrated the 30th anniversary of their career-defining album “Sports” by releasing a deluxe 2-CD edition.

Sports – 30th Anniversary Deluxe Edition” contains a remastered edition of the original classic album on disc one and a bonus disc of live versions.

The band was formed in the late 1970s, drawing members from the San Francisco bands, Clover and Soundhole. Originally named Huey Lewis and the American Express, they became Huey Lewis and the News in 1980 and released their self-titled debut album the same year. The album was worthwhile musically, but didn’t make a significant commercial impact. The follow-up, “Picture This” (1982), did much better, but it wasn’t until “Sports” in 1983 that the band really broke through in a big way. “Sports” showcased the band’s talent for crafting catchy, hook-laden pop songs, which included a nod to the past but also embraced 1980s studio production innovations. It went multi-platinum, topped the US album charts and yielded the classic hits “The Heart of Rock & Roll,” “Heart and Soul,” “I Want a New Drug” and “If This is It”.

“The Heart of Rock & Roll” – Huey Lewis and the News

Huey Lewis and the News continue to entertain fans to this day, albeit with less fanfare than in their mid-’80s heyday. This deluxe edition of “Sports” is a reminder of when and why the band was one of the most popular acts in North America. The music is as fun now as it was three decades ago. The only complaint is that this could have been a super-deluxe edition including a third disc of studio material, particularly as the band hasn’t released much archive material in the past.

The special edition includes an expanded booklet with photos and memorabilia from the band’s archive and new liner notes by music journalist and author Gary Graff.
