Eric Bana to star in “Elvis & Nixon”

Eric Bana and Danny Huston will play Elvis Presley and Richard Nixon, respectively, in a movie based on the meeting between the pair which occurred on December 21, 1970.

Variety reports that Cary Elwes, whose acting credits include the “Saw” franchise, is writing the screenplay for “Elvis & Nixon” and will make his directorial debut on the film. Michael Benaroya (“The Romantics” and “Margin Call”) will produce with Holly Wiersma (“Bobby” and “The Son of No One”).

Elvis’ meeting with Nixon was prompted by the rock ‘n’ roll star, who wrote a letter to the President while on a plane bound for Washington in order to offer his services as a “Federal Agent at Large.” As sincere as Elvis’ letter might have been, one of his main priorities was in fact to attain a Federal Narcotics Badge for his collection.

This meeting has already been presented on screen in the 1997 movie “Elvis and Nixon,” but the whole thing was played for laughs in that movie, with a number of invented scenes.

No date has yet been set for the start of production on “Elvis & Nixon.”
