Fox Home Entertainment has announced that Elvis Presley’s debut movie “Love Me Tender” will be released on Blu-ray on July 30.

The movie was filmed and released in 1956, the year that Elvis broke through in a big way on the national stage with a series of huge chart hits, and high-profile television appearances.

“Love Me Tender” tells the story of the Confederate Reno Brothers at the close of the Civil War, who rob a Union Army payroll before discovering that the war has ended. Vance Reno, played by Richard Egan, arrives home intending to marry his sweetheart Cathy (Debra Paget), but finds that Cathy was wrongly told that Vance had been killed and subsequently married his younger brother Clint, played by Elvis.

The movie is a solid debut for Elvis, which doesn’t quite reach the heights of “Jailhouse Rock” or “King Creole” but is substantially superior to some of his later Hollywood efforts. This was a young, enthusiastic Elvis, with genuine aspirations to be a good actor. Given the popularity of the young star’s records at the time, it’s no surprise that the producers decided that Elvis should sing in the movie. The movie was in fact originally titled “The Reno Brothers,” but re-titled “Love Me Tender” to take advantage of the cross promotion with what would become a hit single.

The Blu-ray will feature 1080p video, a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 soundtrack, and the following bonus features:

• Love Me Tender: The Birth & Boom Of The Elvis Hit
• Love Me Tender: The Soundtrack.

Fox have also announced that Marilyn Monroe’s “Bus Stop” and “Niagara – 60th Anniversary Edition” will be released on Blu-ray on July 30.
