Elton John and Leon Russell – “The Union” out today
Written by admin on October 19, 2010 – 8:12 am -| Elton John has announced that he is not going to make any more pop albums. Instead he intends to focus on roots projects along the lines of his latest album “The Union“, which is a collaboration with piano legend Leon Russell.

In an interview with USA Today, Elton said:
| “It was one of the greatest experiences of my life, not just musically, but emotionally. I fell in love with this guy all over again.” |
| “I’ve never had such a personal experience making a record and it’s given me verification that what I should do in the future is make records like this. I might collaborate with Lady Gaga or the Scissor Sisters on a single, but I’m not going to make pop albums anymore.” |
Elton John met Leon Russell in 1970 during John’s run at The Troubadour in Los Angeles and the two toured together shortly after. Leon Russell had begun his career as a session musician in the 1960s and played with some of the finest artists of the era, including Jerry Lee Lewis, The Byrds, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. Russell’s career never reached the heights of John’s, but he had some solo success in the 1970s, most notably with his 1972 album “Carney” which reached number two on the US charts.
The 14-track project, “The Union”, features Elton John and Leon Russell duetting on a great selection of soul, gospel, country and rock tracks. There are also guest appearances by Brian Wilson, Neil Young, Booker T. Jones, Robert Randolph and a 10-piece choir.
