Crosby, Stills and Nash support campaign finance reform initiative

StampStampede Crosby, Stills and Nash (CSN) are supporting the StampStampede advocacy campaign which aims to “Stamp Money Out of Politics.”

StampStampede was created by Ben & Jerry’s co-founder Ben Cohen and is part of a growing national movement calling for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to affirm that corporations are not people. This would pave the way for legislation to limit campaign contributions from corporations, which many feel act to drown out the voices of ordinary Americans.

David Crosby of CSN says:

“People have been fighting to get soft money out of politics for decades. The McCain-Feingold and Shays-Meehan bills are good examples—but the reform hasn’t gone nearly far enough, and the stakes keep getting higher. We have to fight harder, and building public awareness is critical to make the necessary progress.”

StampStampede has made rubber stamps (sold at cost on their website) bearing campaign finance reform slogans that can be legally stamped onto paper currency—potentially reaching billions of impressions (based on Federal Reserve estimates on the lifespan of bills).

Ben Cohen says:

“This is a petition on steroids. The average dollar that is stamped gets seen by over 800 people. If one person stamped five bills a day for a year, that would result in a million-and-a-half impressions. If 1,000 people did that, it would be a billion-and-a-half over the next 2-½ years. It’s economic jiu jitsu—using money to get money out of politics.”

The Amend-O-Matic, a large (10′ high by 14′ long by 6′ wide) Rube Goldberg-style money-stamping machine mounted on a flatbed cutaway van, will be parked outside the entrance at the following eight dates on CSN’s upcoming U.S. Tour:

  • 7 May – Ruth Eckerd Hall, Clearwater, FL
  • 8 May – Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, Sarasota, FL
  • 14 May – Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall, Ft. Meyers, FL
  • 15 May – King Center for the Performing Arts, Melbourne, FL
  • 17 May – Florida Theatre, Jacksonville, FL
  • 19 May – Ovens Auditorium, Charlotte, NC
  • 22 May – Von Braun Center Concert Hall, Huntsville, AL
  • 24 May – Montgomery Performing Arts Center, Montgomery, Al.

CSN’s 2013 tour builds on the excitement of their acclaimed year-long 2012 tour, which you can get a taste of via the “CSN 2012” DVD/Blu-ray that was released last summer.
