Bond composer John Barry dead at 77

Oscar-winning film composer, John Barry, died last night of a heart attack in Glen Cove, New York. He was 77.

John Barry composer Barry was born in York, England on November 3, 1933. He first found musical success with his band the John Barry Seven in the 1950s, before turning his hand to composing for film and television in 1959. Among his huge number of credits over half a century were 12 James Bond soundtracks, including “Goldfinger”, “Thunderball”, “You Only Live Twice” and “Octopussy.” He won five Oscars for his work on the movies “Born Free” (Best Original Song and Best Original Score), “The Lion in Winter” (Best Original Score), “Out of Africa” (Best Original Score) and “Dances with Wolves” (Best Original Score).

Barry’s last film score was for “Enigma” in 2001. In 2005, he was presented with the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship Award.

A statement from John Barry’s family says that the funeral arrangements will be private but “a memorial service will be held later this year in the UK.” He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Laurie, and his four children and five grandchildren.
