Bobby Vee has announced that he is suffering from the “mild stages of Alzheimer’s disease.”

The 69-year-old former teen idol received the diagnosis in January, 2011, but held off on making an announcement until now.

In a statement on his website, Vee says:

“As my buddy Fabian says, getting old is not for the meek. I think he may be right. A little over a year ago, I was diagnosed with the mild stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Needless to say, it was a moment that stunned my family and myself to the core. Since this time I have chosen to remain private and to focus on what is most important to me: my family and my music. It has been a time to reflect and to just be. To create memories for my grandchildren and to celebrate life’s goodness. To throw baseballs and catch fish. To be the audience.”

Bobby Vee has been entertaining the public with his infectious pop music since 1959. He got his break when his band were asked to join the Winter Dance Party tour following the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper. Over the next few years, he was a regular on the charts, achieving fourteen top forty hits, including six gold singles. Among his biggest were “Take Good Care Of My Baby,” “Rubber Ball” and “The Night Has A Thousand Eyes.”

Vee has also announced that new music is on the way in the coming months, but he has no plans to tour.

Best wishes to Bobby Vee and his family.
