The Beach Boys – Live on the BBC

The Beach Boys performed a special gig for BBC Radio 2 last night at London’s Mermaid Theatre, ahead of their appearances at the Royal Albert Hall and Wembley Arena later this week.

A replay of the show is available on the Radio 2 website until October 1. The gig begins around 18 minutes in and is preceded by Jo Whiley’s interview with the band.

The hour-long gig featured the following 19 songs:

  • Do It Again
  • Catch A Wave
  • Surfin’ Safari
  • Please Let Me Wonder
  • Then I Kissed Her
  • Isn’t It Time
  • Why Do Fools Fall In Love?
  • Don’t Worry Baby
  • I Get Around
  • Heroes And Villains
  • God Only Knows
  • Wouldn’t It Be Nice
  • California Girls
  • Good Vibrations
  • Help Me Rhonda
  • Rock And Roll Music
  • Surfin’ USA
  • Barbara Ann
  • Fun, Fun, Fun.

Although there is no hint of disharmony during the show or interview, there seems to be some tension within the band over Mike Love’s decision to drop Brian Wilson, Al Jardine and David Marks after this tour and return to his own line-up of the band, which includes Bruce Johnston (an early, but not original member of the band). Al Jardine has taken to Facebook to ask fans to sign a petition to convince Mike Love that the surviving members of the band should remain for forthcoming shows. He says:

“To Mike Love. In order to preserve the validity of ‘The Beach Boys’ as a whole, and not as a ‘money saving, stripped down version’ that only contains one original member, and one member that joined in 1965, we ask you to reinstate the three other members to the touring group for your final years performing. It’s the right thing to do, and it’s what the fans want!”

It’s difficult to determine how significant the dispute is and whether Love is really intent on leaving the reunited line-up or simply taking a break. Recent comments from him have suggested that he was amenable to further recording and live appearances.

Yesterday saw the UK release of two Beach Boys greatest hits collections, and remastered editions of 12 of their classic albums. The titles will be released in the US and Canada on October 9. For further information on the Beach Boys releases go to:
