Former lead singer of the Temptations, Ali “Ollie” Woodson, died on Sunday, May 30 in California from leukaemia. He was 58-years-old.

Woodson wasn’t the original lead singer of the Temptations, but he took on this role from 1984 to 1986, and from 1988 to 1996.

His biggest success with the group came in 1984 with “Treat Her Like a Lady,” which he co-wrote, co-produced and sang lead on. The single reached number two on the US R&B charts.

The Temptations wasn’t the only classic group that Woodson was associated with. He had been a member of Bill Pinkney’s Original Drifters in the early 1970s and would return to work with that group briefly in the mid-90s after leaving the Temptations.

In the late 1990s, Woodson toured with a Temptations-style revue called Ali-Ollie Woodson & the Emperors of Soul. He then released a solo album in 2001 called “Right Here All Along.”

Woodson continued to make live appearances throughout the last decade of his life, including shows with The Temptations Revue, featuring Dennis Edwards, from 2006 to 2008, and a tour with Aretha Franklin in 2008.

Commenting on Woodson’s death, President of the Motown Alumni Association, Billy Wilson, said:

“”He was an excellent singer. He’s one of the few singers who was accommodating to virtually everything. He had a style and swagger about himself that was different than the other Temptations.”
