Elvis photographer, Alfred Wertheimer, dies

Alfred Wertheimer, the photographer responsible for some of the most memorable images ever taken of the young Elvis Presley, has died of natural causes at his New York apartment.

Wertheimer was born in Germany in 1929 and emigrated to Brooklyn as a young boy. He graduated Cooper Union in 1951 and, after serving as an Army Signal Corp photographer, began working as a freelance photographer in the early 1950s.

Elvis 56 – Photo collection

Some of the most iconic and compelling photographs of Elvis Presley from the 1950s were taken by Alfred Wertheimer during 1956. Many of the best of these are now available in the book ‘Elvis 1956’.

Elvis had made his first record in 1954 and had built a solid following throughout 1955, but 1956 was the year he become a national star, making his first television appearance, his first movie and having his first of many million selling records. Wertheimer travelled with Elvis Presley throughout 1956, capturing both the public and private side of the young rock star, including legendary television and on stage appearances. Read more »
