Written by admin on March 10, 2011 – 8:14 am -

Guitar legend Eric Clapton sold 70 of his guitars in a charity auction last night, with proceeds going to the Crossroads Center in Antigua. The drug and alcohol rehabiliation facility was founded by Clapton in 1998.

The auction was carried out simultaneously in New York, Los Angeles, London and online by Bonhams and it raised more than $2.15m.

The biggest seller at the auction was a 1948 Gibson L-5P hollow body guitar which went for $83,000 – far in excess of the $30,000 estimate.

Other high value lots included:

  • $70,000 for a 12-string acoustic Martin guitar that Clapton played on his song Motherless Child. This exceeded the estimate by a massive $65,000
  • $51,000 for Clapton’s signature Stratocaster
  • $30,000 for a 2006 replica of Clapton’s “Blackie” Stratocaster, which he played throughout the 1970s. The original was sold in 2004.
  • $28,000 for a vintage 1960s Supro amp said to have been used by guitarist Jimmy Page on the Led Zeppelin II album.

This is the third large auction of Clapton’s instruments. The first in 1999 raised more than $5 million and the second in 2004 raised $7.4 million.
