SONY/RCA/Legacy Recordings have announced that they will release a 10-disc deluxe box set featuring material recorded during the filming of the 1970 documentary “Elvis: That’s The Way It Is”. The set will include an expanded version of the original album, complete with outtakes and singles; six live shows from the summer 1970 Vegas season at which the movie was filmed; recordings made during rehearsals for the Vegas season; and DVDs featuring both the original 1970 theatrical version of the movie and the 2001 Special Edition. The set also comes with an 80-page booklet which includes rare photographs, memorabilia and recording data.

The substantial collection brings together a great deal of fine material in one place, including shows from what was arguably Elvis’ finest Vegas season of the 1970s. Four of the six shows have never been released before on a regular retail title, although two of those were released on the FTD collector’s label. Other content has been released before over a number of years and several titles, including the three-disc 30th anniversary celebration of “Elvis: That’s The Way It Is” (2000). The rehearsals disc comprises mainly songs that Elvis was jamming on with his band, rather than rehearsals for songs that were seriously intended for inclusion in the show. Given that many songs are already duplicated multiple times via the live discs, this is an understandable decision by the producers.

The box set debuts in August, alongside a two-disc Legacy Edition of the original album, and a Blu-ray edition featuring both versions of the movie. The pre-publicity makes no mention of a Blu-ray version of the box set, which will disappoint some fans.
