Whitney Houston has sadly died aged just 48. She was reportedly found dead in a room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel where she was due to attend a pre-Grammys party this evening. No cause of death has been given.

Houston came to prominence in the mid-1980s with the albums “Whitney Houston” (1985) and “Whitney” (1987), which produced some of the best pop songs of the decade, including “Saving All My Love for You,” “How Will I Know,” “The Greatest Love of All,” “Didn’t We Almost Have It All”, “Where Do Broken Hearts Go” and “I Wanna Dance With Somebody.”

Hollywood soon came calling and Houston had great success with the movies “The Bodyguard,” “Waiting to Exhale” and “The Preacher’s Wife” (1996). Another hit album, “My Love Is Your Love,” followed in 1998, but her problems with addiction became apparent in this period and would continue over the next decade.

There were signs of a comeback in 2009 when her album “I Look To You” hit the top of the charts, but hopes were dashed by erratic performances on a subsequent concert tour. More recently, there were fresh hopes of a comeback with Houston producing and starring alongside Jordin Sparks and Mike Epps in a remake of the 1976 film Sparkle.

Although Houston’s talent has been overshadowed by her personal problems in recent years, she deserves to be remembered as one of the giants of the pop world. In that spirit, here’s a reminder of what all the fuss was about in the 1980s with a Grammy-winning performance on “Saving All My Love For You.”
