Tom Jones covers Leonard Cohen’s “Tower Of Song”

Check out Sir Tom Jones’ brand new video for “Tower Of Song,” which will be the opening track on his forthcoming album “Spirit In The Room”.

“Tower Of Song” was written by Leonard Cohen and Jennifer Warnes, and originally appeared on Cohen’s 1988 album “I’m Your Man”. In the latest issue of GQ, Jones said “My favourite line on the album is from Leonard Cohen’s ‘Tower Of Song’. ‘My friends are gone / and my hair is grey’ That rang a bell as soon as I heard it.”

In keeping with the lyric, Jones delivers a subtle and emotional vocal, far from the bombast that is often associated with the singer. It’s an approach that will be familiar to those who have heard “What Good Am I?” and “Did Trouble Me” from his previous album “Praise And Blame”.

For “Spirit in the Room,” Jones again collaborated with producer Ethan Johns, whose back-to-basics production style was such an important factor in the success of “Praise And Blame”.

In addition to the Cohen cover, Jones also turns to the songbooks of Paul McCartney (“(I Want To) Come Home”), Tom Waits (“Bad As Me”), Paul Simon (“Love And Blessings”), and Richard Thompson (“Dimming Of The Day”).
