The Moody Blues: Live at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 – review

Written by admin on June 26, 2010 – 8:36 pm -

The Moody Blues were at their creative peak when they played the Isle of Wight festival in 1970, alongside such legendary acts as The Who, Jimi Hendrix and The Doors.

You can now see this brilliant set on Blu-ray with the newly released “The Moody Blues: Threshold Of A Dream Live At The IOW Festival 1970.”
The Moody Blues: Threshold Of A Dream Live At The IOW Festival 1970

With so little concert footage available of the original Moody Blues line up, this Blu-ray is a real treat for fans of the band. The Moody Blues’ 55-minute set includes some of their biggest tracks and demonstrates the band’s musicality and versatility. The following songs are included:

  • “Gypsy”
  • “Tuesday Afternoon”
  • “Never Comes The Day”
  • “Tortoise And The Hare”
  • “Questions”
  • “Sunset”
  • “Melancholy Man”
  • “Nights In White Satin”
  • “Legend Of A Mind”
  • “Ride My See Saw.”

Sounds and audio

This show was already released last year on DVD, so is it worth upgrading to the Blu-ray? That depends on how important picture and sound quality are to you. The colours are brighter on the Blu-ray and the picture is slightly sharper, but the shooting conditions and age of the footage mean that the differences are fairly minor. As for the audio, there is an upgraded 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track for the Blu-ray which is excellent. If you have a set up to take advantage of this and you are a big fan of the band, it’s worth buying again.

Extras

The Blu-ray also includes around 20 minutes of recent video of the band, and a discusion about the importance of the Mellatron with former band member Mike Pinder.

Overall, this is a great release which showcases one of the most talented bands of the 1960s at the peak of their powers. Some allowances have to be made due to the age of the footage, but this doesn’t detract from the great performances.
