Savile was born in Leeds in 1926 and rose to prominence in the late 1950s as a Radio Luxembourg DJ. This led to presenting jobs on various television shows, including ‘Young at Heart,’ ‘Juke Box Jury,’ ‘Thank Your Lucky Stars,’ and the BBC’s flagship pop music show ‘Top of the Pops.’ He left Radio Luxembourg in 1967 and in 1968 began an association with the BBC’s new Radio 1 station which lasted until 1987.
For all his achievements in radio and television, Savile will perhaps be best remembered for the hugely popular ‘Jim’ll Fix It,’ which ran from 1975 to 1991.
Savile was also well known for his charity work, raising around £40 million through his various ventures, including more than 200 marathon runs.
