“Jimi Plays Berkeley” expanded edition on DVD and Blu-ray

An expanded edition of “Jimi Plays Berkeley” is released on Blu-ray and DVD next month.
The documentary includes both concerts given at California’s Berkeley Community Theater on May 30, 1970, as well as 15 minutes of never-before-seen footage, including performances of “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” “Machine Gun” and “Hear My Train A Comin'”. These take their place alongside songs such as “Johnny B. Goode,” “Star Spangled Banner,” “I Don’t Live Today” “Purple Haze”. |
The footage has been digitally restored from the original 16mm negative, and the 5.1 surround stereo soundtrack has been mixed by Jimi’s original sound engineer Eddie Kramer.
The Blu-ray/DVD also includes the audio of the second show, which will be re-released separately on CD and 12-inch vinyl as “Jimi Hendrix Experience: Live At Berkeley (The Second Set)”. This has the following tracklist:

- Pass It On (Straight Ahead)
- Hey Baby (New Rising Sun)
- Lover Man
- Stone Free
- Hey Joe
- I Don’t Live Today
- Machine Gun
- Foxey Lady
- Star Spangled Banner
- Purple Haze
- Voodoo Child.
These titles are released on July 10.
| On that date, Legacy Recordings is also releasing the 90-minute documentary “Jimi Hendrix – Voodoo Child” on Blu-ray. This was originally released as a DVD in the “West Coast Seattle Boy” boxed set. The documentary, directed by Bob Smeaton, chronicles Jimi’s career in his own words, making use of interviews, letters and other writings, and including classic performances and rare footage and photos from the Hendrix family archive. |  |
