James Phelps dies aged 78

Gospel and R&B singer James Phelps died in Los Angeles on Tuesday from complications related to diabetes.

James Phelps was born in Shreveport, Louisiana on April 2, 1932. His early music career centred around gospel music. As a member of the groups the Holy Wonders and the Soul Stirrers he performed with Lou Rawls and Sam Cooke, respectively.

Phelps only big hit was “Love is a Five Letter Word” which he recorded with Clefs of Calvary in 1965, but he continued to tour and record for the rest of his life, performing with such soul legends as James Brown and Otis Redding.
