Happy Fourth of July to our American readers.

We celebrate the USA’s 235th birthday with three of the greatest songs ever written about the country.

Elvis Presley – “America the Beautiful”

One of America’s most patriotic musical sons, Elvis Presley, sang “America the Beautiful” in concert throughout 1976 to mark America’s Bicentennial.

Nat King Cole – “Route 66”

There have been many versions of this song about America’s most famous highway. Written by Bobby Troup in 1946, it was first recorded by Nat King Cole in the same year.

Bruce Springsteen – “This Land is Your Land”

Woody Guthrie wrote “This Land is Your Land” in 1940 as a response to Irving Berlin’s song “God Bless America.” It has since been recorded by numerous artists, including Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger and Peter, Paul and Mary.

This version from Bruce Springsteen was recorded on the “Born In the USA” tour in the mid-’80s.
