Gary Moore dies in Spanish hotel

Written by admin on February 6, 2011 – 8:29 pm -

Guitar great Gary Moore was found dead earlier today at the Kempinski Hotel in Estepona, Spain. The 58-year-old had been on holiday with his girlfriend.

Moore is best known for his on-and-off career with Thin Lizzy and a number of successful solo projects, including the great album “Still Got the Blues.”
Gary Moore

Gary Moore was born on April 4, 1952 in Belfast and began playing guitar at the age of eight. At 16-years-old, he moved to Dublin and joined the band Skid Row, whose lead singer was the future Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott. This association with Lynott led to several stints with Thin Lizzy throughout the 1970s, initially replacing guitarist Eric Bell. He also played with jazz fusion band Colosseum II in the 1970s.

Between 1973 and 2008, Moore released 20 solo studio albums and a number of hit singles, including “Parisienne Walkways” in 1979, which featured Phil Lynott on vocals and hit number eight on the UK singles chart. Moore’s most successful period was the early 1990s, with the hit albums “Still Got the Blues” (1990) and “After Hours” (1992).

Moore also collaborated with many artists during his long career, including George Harrison, Bob Dylan, B.B. King, the Beach Boys, Ozzy Osbourne, Greg Lake, Albert Collins, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker.

Tributes have been paid to Moore by former Thin lizzy members Eric Bell, Brian Downey and Scott Gorham.

Eric Bell:

“I still can’t believe it. He was so robust, he wasn’t a rock casualty, he was a healthy guy. He was a superb player and a dedicated musician.”

Brian Downey:

“I am in total shock. He will always be in my thoughts and prayers and I just can’t believe he is gone.”

Scott Gorham:

“Playing with Gary during the Black Rose era was a great experience, he was a great player and a great guy. I will miss him.”
