“Elvis – Prince From Another Planet” to contain unseen footage

Further details have emerged about the “Elvis – Prince From Another Planet” release, which marks the 40th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s gigs at New York City’s Madison Square Garden.

Elvis - Prince From Another Planet “Elvis – Prince From Another Planet” will be released as a 2-CD/DVD set containing remixed editions of the afternoon and evening shows from June 10, 1972, previously unseen footage from the afternoon show, and footage of the press conference. Remastered editions of the shows will also feature on a 2-CD Legacy Edition of “Elvis: As Recorded At Madison Square Garden”.

The evening show was originally released within days of the live show in 1972 as “Elvis: As Recorded At Madison Square Garden,” but a sound upgrade is long overdue. The afternoon show was first released in 1997 as “An Afternoon in the Garden.” The new mix on the two shows has been carried out by respected New York engineer Michael Brauer.

The most intriguing aspect of the release is the live footage, which reportedly lasts approximately one hour. In a press release, Sony Legacy promises:

“Unseen footage of the Saturday afternoon show, captured on hand-held camera by a fan, and now acquired by Legacy from that fan decades later for this package. Rarely is unseen footage of Elvis in concert discovered, so this footage lends historical importance to the package. The film is a revealing portrait of a physically commanding Elvis and his powerhouse TCB Band, background vocalists, and orchestra.”

The quality of the unseen footage should be a significant step up from the amateur footage of Elvis at the Garden that has circulated unofficially for years, as this has often been several generations removed from the original reels.

“Elvis Presley – Prince From Another Planet” will also include a 5,000-word essay written by Lenny Kaye, longtime guitarist for Patti Smith. Kaye was in attendance at Elvis’ Madison Square Garden press conference and covered the gigs as music editor of Cavalier magazine.

“Elvis – Prince From Another Planet” and the Legacy Edition of “Elvis: As Recorded At Madison Square Garden” are released in November.

Ahead of the Madison Square Garden release came a more predictable offering this week in the shape of the “I Am An Elvis Fan” compilation. This is part of a campaign by Sony and EPE that saw fans voting online to choose the tracklist of Elvis’ next mainstream album. It was a novel idea and a good attempt to interact with fans, but the result is a fairly typical greatest hits-style collection. I Am An Elvis Fan CD
