Bruce Springsteen’s “High Hopes” out now

Bruce Springsteen guested on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday night to celebrate the release of his new album “High Hopes”.

Springsteen and the E Street Band, including guitarist Tom Morello, performed three songs from the album, including the title track, “Heaven’s Wall,” and “Just Like Fire Would”. Springsteen also found time to once again duet with Jimmy Fallon, this time with a parody of “Born to Run” which poked fun at Governor Chris Christie over the so-called “Bridgegate” scandal.

Originally intended as an album of unreleased material from the past decade, the album contents began to take shape during rehearsals for the Australian leg of Springsteen’s 2013 tour when guitarist Tom Morello suggested that they perform “High Hopes”, which is a Tim McConnell track that Springsteen had originally recorded with the E Street Band in 1995. The band recorded the song mid-tour while in Sydney, along with a cover of “Just Like Fire Would” by the Australian punk band The Saints. The third and final cover on the album, “Dream Baby Dream,” is a 1979 track by the New York punk band Suicide. Springsteen previously played a solo version of the song on his 2005 acoustic tour.

“The Wall” is another song that had been performed live before Springsteen got around to recording it in the studio. The track was inspired by a Jersey Shore rocker called Walter Cichon who impressed a young Springsteen as leader of the local band The Motifs before he died in action in Vietnam.

There are also new recordings of “The Ghost of Tom Joad” and “American Skin (41 Shots),” both featuring the guitar work of Tom Morello. Springsteen said of these tracks: “I felt they were among the best of my writing, and deserved a proper studio recording”.

The remaining tracks (“Harry’s Place,” “Down in the Hole,” “Frankie Fell in Love,” “This Is Your Sword” and “Hunter of Invisible Game”) are outtakes from albums recorded since Springsteen reunited with the E Street Band in 1999.
