“Bob Dylan and The Band – The Basement Tapes Complete” box set

The forthcoming 6-CD “The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11” brings together all of the recordings from Bob Dylan’s so-called “Basement Tapes,” including many that have not been heard before. The box set and a 2-CD collection of highlights from the set will be released in November.

The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11

The 138-track “The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11” brings together, for the first time ever, every salvageable recording from the tapes, including the recently discovered earlier recordings made in the “Red Room” of Dylan’s home, Hi Lo Ha, in the Byrdcliffe area of Woodstock.

Those “Red Room” sessions took place between March and June of 1967, after which the sessions moved to the basement of a house dubbed “Big Pink” in West Saugerties, New York, where the bulk of the recordings were made. Dylan was backed by a group that would later become known as The Band, comprising Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson and, later, Levon Helm.

The informal sessions included recordings of traditional songs, covers of songs by the likes of Johnny Cash, Hank Williams and John Lee Hooker, and many newly written Dylan songs, including “This Wheels On Fire,” “I Shall Be Released,” “You Ain’t Going Nowhere” and “The Mighty Quinn”.

The first official release of songs from these sessions was the heavily overdubbed “Basement Tapes” double album in 1975, which was overseen by Robbie Robertson. A lot of material has also leaked on bootleg, including the 5-CD 1990s set “The Genuine Basement Tapes” and the 4-CD “A Tree With Roots”. The exciting thing for Dylan fans is that “The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11” features 30 recordings that did not appear on the bootleg sets.

One of the previously unheard tracks is this alternate take of “Odds and Ends”:

“Odds and Ends” features on the full box set and also the 2-CD collection of highlights from the box set titled “The Basement Tapes Raw”.

Garth Hudson was involved with the production of the box set, working closely with Canadian music archivist and producer Jan Haust to restore the deteriorating tapes. The performances are presented as originally recorded, without overdubs, and for the most part in chronological order, based on Hudson’s numbering system.
