Bill Haley – 30 years on

Written by admin on February 9, 2011 – 10:33 am -

Bill Haley Rock ‘n’ Roll pioneer Bill Haley died 30 years ago today at his home in Harlington, Texas aged 55. He had been diagnosed with a brain tumour several months before, but the cause of death was a heart attack.

Bill Haley was born in Highland Park, Michigan on July 6, 1925 and began his musical career in the mid-40s playing with various bands. In 1952, his band Bill Haley’s Saddlemen was renamed Bill Haley & His Comets and the following year their recording of “Crazy Man, Crazy” hit number 15 on the Billboard singles chart. A number of hits followed, including “Shake, Rattle and Roll”, “See You Later, Alligator” and the biggest of all “Rock Around the Clock”, which was the first record to sell a million in Britain.

More dynamic, younger rockers would follow and overshadow Haley, but for a short period in the mid-50s he was the biggest rock ‘n’ roll star in the world.
